League of Legends has been at the top of the esports and Twitch viewership world for a long time—but last month might signal a changing of the guard, thanks to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. PUBG was the most watched game in August, beating out League for the first time in a very long time, according to Twitch viewership data website Gamoloco,.
Gamoloco has been monitoring Twitch data since 2014, and League has been at the top of every month in hours watched since October of that year. PUBG has now broken that streak, which lasted 31 months. PUBG’s success on Twitch is thanks in large part to the hugely popular streamers who play it, like DrDisRespect, Shroud, Lirik, Summit1g, and many more. It seems like everybody has been playing PUBG this summer. After selling eight million copies in just under five months, and surpassing Dota 2 on Steam for highest concurrent player count, it’s no surprise to see PUBG where it is on the viewership charts. August also saw PUBG’s first ever LAN event in gamescom’s PUBG Invitational, so it’s very likely that we will be seeing more Battlegrounds esports in the future.
