Just one day after becoming the third game to reach 800,000 concurrent players on Steam, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds became the top game on the platform, beating out Dota 2. Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene tweeted out this image on Sunday morning, showing that 877,844 players were in the battlegrounds at one time, beating out Dota 2’s player count of 842,919.
PUBG now also holds the record for the second-highest concurrent player count of all time, as it passed Counter-Strike: Global Offensive with its player count today, according to SteamCharts. Only Dota 2’s record of nearly 1.3 million players in March 2016 had more. Dota 2 has long been the king of concurrent players on Steam, as it is the most-played game on the platform basically all day, every day. Taking into account that Dota 2 is free to play and PUBG hasn’t even been fully released yet, today’s achievement by PUBG should not be taken lightly. This past week just saw PUBG’s first esports LAN event, and there are big improvements planned for the game over the coming months before it is fully released, so the player count should continue to grow even more from here.
