Since Apex Legends’ release in 2019, diehard fans of the battle royale have made it their goal to unlock all of the game’s legendary loot.
When the game launched, only one Heirloom set existed for Wraith. More legends have joined the Heirloom club since then, and there are more than a handful of Heirloom sets available in Apex.
But just as it was on day one of Apex, many players are still scratching their heads as to how to unlock the game’s rarest collectibles. Compared to other cosmetics in Apex, Heirlooms are the crown jewel of what Respawn Entertainment offers when it comes to quality and customizability.
With each Heirloom set, players will receive three items for the respective legend. The sets include an intro quip, a melee weapon skin, and a banner pose.
Heirloom sets don’t even show up on the skins list until they’re unlocked, meaning you’ll need to resort to watching videos featuring them to decide on which one to unlock. You can’t purchase or craft individual items from the Heirloom sets.
But exactly how do you unlock them?
When Heirloom sets were first introduced, you could get your hands on them by opening Apex packs. These packs are simply received by leveling up and can also be bought for Apex Coins that players can purchase in exchange for real money.
This meant that the Heirloom set you’d get would be purely based on luck. Players looking to unlock their favorite legend’s Heirloom set had no way of unlocking them for sure, which called for a change since receiving the Heirloom set of a legend you never play can be a bummer.
This method of unlocking Heirloom sets changed since then, and players now get to unlock the Heirloom skins they want by using Heirloom Shards.
How to get Heirloom Shards in Apex Legends?
You’ll need to collect Heirloom Shards to unlock Heirloom sets in Apex, and these shards will drop from Apex packs. Each Apex pack will have a chance to feature Heirloom Shards inside, and this side currency will keep stacking as you unlock more of it.
Before you open 500 Apex packs, you should receive enough Heirloom Shards to craft an Heirloom set of your choice. You can also speed up the process by purchasing more Apex packs. It’s a luck-based system, though, meaning you may unlock an Heirloom set within your first 100 packs or everything may come down to the 500th pack.
You won’t be able to receive any more Heirloom Shards if you have all the sets unlocked. Considering the developer adds new ones to the game, it may be a good idea not to unlock an Heirloom set you’ll never use so you can keep saving for the next one that comes along.
