One of the best aspects of Fortnite is how fun and easy it is to customize your character. Over the years, some amazing gliders, contrails, and more have been created so you can put together an epic locker loadout. Some contrails are no longer available in Fortnite, making them the rarest items today.

The rarest contrails in Fortnite
Out of the 183 contrails available in Fortnite today, many were exclusive to a particular season’s battle pass. These limited-edition Fortnite items have not been seen in the Item Shop, and only a small percentage of today’s players will have them equipped. This means you’re fortunate if you have recently seen one in the wild!
Rainbow
- Source: Chapter One, season three battle pass tier 20.
- Release Date: Feb. 22, 2018.
The Rainbow contrail is the first one introduced to a Fortnite battle pass and is such a fun way to bring color to your cosmetics loadout. As you dive through the air, a soft rainbow smoke effect billows behind you when this contrail is equipped. This rare item could be unlocked in the Chapter One, season three battle pass, so unless you were playing back in 2018 and had bought the pass, it’s no longer available. The Rainbow contrail is simple but effective and remains a favorite among players who unlocked it in Chapter One.
Ultramarine
- Source: Chapter One, season three battle pass tier 36.
- Release Date: Feb. 22, 2018.
The Ultramarine contrail is a smart and simple blue effect as you skydive to the Fortnite island. This was one of the first contrails to be gifted to players in the Chapter One, season three battle pass. At this point in the game, contrails had very basic animation and no unique sound effects—that would come later. Ultramarine formed subtle lightning sparks at the hands, with dark and light blue streaks forming behind you. It’s not the most exciting contrail around so it would be rare to see it being used even by OG players.
All-Star
- Source: Chapter One, season three battle pass tier 50.
- Release Date: Feb. 22, 2018.
All-Star brings some dazzling effects to your loadout so everyone will know you’re a star! Anyone who wanted to unlock this starry contrail would have to level up enough to get to tier 50 of the Chapter One, season three battle pass. This trail forms shining white and blue 3D stars of all sizes flowing quickly from the character’s hands as they fall. It’s still a popular contrail today, although not many players will have it in their locker thanks to its exclusivity to the battle pass.
Bubbles
- Source: Chapter One, season three battle pass tier 68.
- Release Date: Feb. 22, 2018.
The Bubbles contrail adds some whimsy to Fortnite as you float towards the island surrounded by popping spheres with a subtle rainbow sheen. Bubbles is another of the Chapter One, season three battle pass exclusive items not available in the Item Shop today. Back then it wasn’t easy getting to tier 68, so this is a special reward to get for reaching those heady heights. It’s a particular favorite of players who enjoy a bit of lighthearted fun in what can be a stressful battle royale!
Flames
- Source: Chapter One, season three battle pass tier 84.
- Release Date: Feb. 22, 2018.
You can make a fiery arrival to the Fortnite island with this intense burning contrail. The Flames contrail is bright and exciting and adds some drama to the start of the match. It was a difficult item to unlock at tier 84, and it took some real XP grinding to achieve it, but it was worth the effort. It remains a popular choice with players today, especially when paired with any of the Lava series skins.
Artifact
- Source: PlayStation Plus Celebration Pack 3
- Release Date: Sept. 12, 2018.
The Artifact contrail was part of a limited-edition reward exclusive to PlayStation Plus subscribers. Anyone with a PlayStation Plus subscription in September 2018 would receive this Fortnite freebie. Since it’s strictly a time-limited exclusive, there’s no way to purchase it anywhere else. It is a simple, but colorful contrail with blue streaks and a shining glitch effect at each hand and foot. If you were lucky enough to get this contrail, you’d also get the rare Flappy glider with google eyes and a Explorer pickaxe.
Beachballs
- Source: 14 Days Of Summer Challenges.
- Release Date: July 5, 2019.
A summertime exclusive from Chapter One, season nine, the Beachballs contrail shows a bunch of bouncy beachballs floating around you as thin starry trails stream from your hands. This was one of 15 rewards from the 14 Days of Summer Challenges. To unlock the Beachballs contrail, you had to score 10 or over in a Clown Carnival mini-game during a Fortnite match. It wasn’t a particularly difficult challenge but because you had to do it in a Battle Royale match, it was made trickier by other players showing up!
Holodata Drop
- Source: Llama-Rama Challenges in Chapter Two, season four
- Release Date: Sept. 23, 2020.
This limited-edition contrail brings a futuristic digital vibe as you free-fall to the island. The Holodata Drop is a pretty rare item due to the fact you would have to play Rocket League and complete one of the Llama-Rama Challenges to get it. To celebrate Rocket League becoming free-to-play, Fortnite players were given some incentives to try it out in the way of some fun challenges. One of the challenges asked players to win a casual online match while using the previous reward, a Fortnite llama flag antennae.
Holly And Divey
- Source: Chapter Two, season one, Winterfest Presents.
- Release Date: Dec. 18, 2019
Winterfest is one of the best times to play Fortnite, as there are always free cosmetics to unlock. In 2019, Chapter Two, season one Winterfest offered 18 different gifts, including festive skins, music, and more. The Holly And Divey contrail was hidden in one of the random presents inside the lodge. It’s rare to see, but if you do have it, you’re lucky since it’s the first every Epic rarity contrail and is the first contrail to have selectable styles!
Virulent Flames
- Source: Chapter One, season six Fortnitemares Challenges
- Release Date: Oct. 29, 2018.
Aside from Winterfest, Fortnitemares is the most popular seasonal event in Fortnite and often gives players the chance to unlock a bunch of spooky free cosmetics. In 2018, the Chapter One, season six Fortnitemares Challenges gave away a few cosmetics, including the Virulent Flames contrail. This creepy purple and green contrail works really well with the rest of the Western Wilds collection, or any other Halloween outfit for that matter. It has never been in the Item Shop since its release as a free item in 2018, but that doesn’t stop many players wishing it was in their locker!
