One of the most sought-after requests from the community in the lead-up to Baldur’s Gate 3 was for developer Larian Studios to add a respec option. In gaming, “respec” means you are allowed to completely reallocate your skill points and abilities whenever you want.
In a strict role-playing game such as Baldur’s Gate 3, the nature around respeccing a character is murky, especially if you want your character to be as realistic as possible. However, if you simply want to experience the game with as many classes as possible, then the ability to respec really comes in handy.
Luckily, Baldur’s Gate 3 does indeed include the ability to respec your character. Here’s how you can take advantage of it.
How to respec ability points in Baldur’s Gate 3
To respec your character in Baldur’s Gate 3, you need to first find Withers in the Dank Crypt of the Overgrown Ruins, a location you’ll come across early in your playthrough.

Once you’ve found Withers, and he’s joined your party, you can visit him at your camp. To respec your character, interact with Withers and select the ‘Can you help me change class?’ dialogue option, which costs 100 gold. Changing class in Baldur’s Gate 3 and respeccing your character requires this same method.
Selecting this dialogue option will bring up a screen that allows you to reassign ability points and skill proficiencies which aren’t tied to your character’s background or race. Simply select the ‘Abilities’ tab on the left-hand side of the screen, and it will bring up another screen that shows your current ability points and proficiencies which you can then alter. There’s also the option to change your class, cantrips and subclass if you wish to do so by selecting the relevant tabs on the left-hand side of the screen.
You can respec both your main character and companions as many times as you like, as long as you have the gold.
