World of Warcraft: Dragonflight brought players to the ancient Dragon Isles to sit at the home of the Dragon Aspects. Though there is still plenty of content for Blizzard to release before players leave Dragonflight, many players have wondered what the next expansion may be.
Ever since Cataclysm, Blizzard has routinely dropped a new expansion every two years. This means likely by the end of 2024, players will already be adventuring on a new continent in some other land. Naturally, WoW players have speculated what this 10th expansion could be or where it may be set.
The Worldsoul Saga expansions, explained
At BlizzCon 2023, Blizzard announced the 10th, 11th, and 12th upcoming expansions to World of Warcraft which are collectively titled The Worldsoul Saga. Announced by developer Chris Metzen, The Worldsoul Saga is the next major installment and continuation of World of Warcraft’s storyline that will take up the next several years of adventuring. The first of these will be World of Warcraft: The War Within which is set to release later in 2024 and will be the 10th expansion for World of Warcraft.
The other two expansions in The Worldsoul Saga received significantly fewer details given that both projects are likely several years out. We currently know that the 11th expansion is titled World of Warcraft: Midnight and the 12th expansion is set to be called World of Warcraft: The Last Titan.
World of Warcraft: The War Within expansion, explained
The 10th expansion in the game’s long-running history, The War Within, will take World of Warcraft players underground into the kingdom of Nerubians, Azeroth.
In The War Within, players can expect a new Allied race in the form of the Earthen Dwarves and plenty of new enemies, including Xal’atath. New zones will include areas such as Azj-kahet, Isle of Dorn, The Ringing Deeps, and more. As with any World of Warcraft expansion, new dungeons, raids, and mechanics are also set to release later down the line.
World of Warcraft: Midnight expansion, explained
World of Warcraft: Midnight is expected to be the 11th expansion in Blizzard’s MMORPG and the second installment in The Worldsoul Saga. Midnight is the current expected name for the project, but this could change closer to the unknown release date.
In this expansion, players will visit the Old World of Quel’thalas as the ominous forces of the Void are trying to destroy the Sunwell. The Void is a massive threat that players have already clashed with multiple times, slaying multiple Old Gods throughout several expansions. From the BlizzCon announcement, Midnight is set to be the final, climatic battle with this eldritch force.
World of Warcraft: The Last Titan expansion, explained
The Last Titan is the 12th World of Warcraft expansion and final part of The Worldsoul Saga. In this expansion, players are set to return to a new, revamped version of Northrend. Here, players will once again step foot in the popular Ulduar raid to witness the return of the Titans to Azeroth. Out of the three upcoming expansions, the least is known about The Last Titan, though players will likely get more information as the previous two release.
The next WoW expansion, summarized
The next three World of Warcraft expansions are set to be The War Within, Midnight, and The Last Titan. Though all three are separate expansions, this will be an overarching story dubbed The Worldsoul Saga. Below is the general information we currently have about the setting for each expansion.
- The War Within – Set in the subterranean kingdom of Azeroth, where players will battle against the Nerubian Kingdom. Expected to release in 2024.
- Midnight – Marks a return to the old world in Quel’thalas, where players will fight against the Void to protect the Sunwell. Currently unknown release date.
- The Last Titan – Returns to Ulduar in Northrend to witness the return of the Titans in Azeroth. Currently unknown release date.
While we don’t know the release date for the 10th, 11th and 12th World of Warcraft expansions, it’s good to know that plenty of content is on the way to the long-running MMORPG.
