WoW The War Within continues Dragonflight’s revamped profession system and adds a host of new resources and recipes for every crafter. If you’re an Engineer, you’ve likely realized how essential Piles of Rusted Scrap are to your profession—and since you’re here, you probably want to know the best way to farm them. We’ve got you covered.
How to farm Pile of Rusted Scrap in WoW The War Within
In WoW The War Within Engineering, you have a chance to get Piles of Rusted Scrap when you use the Pilfer Through Parts ability on stacks of five Engineering-crafted items—even those from previous expansions.
So, the best (and cheapest) way to farm Piles of Rusted Scrap is to use Pilfer Through Parts on five Handful of Severite Bolts, a Dragonflight-crafted Engineering item you can purchase on the auction house. This information is courtesy of Roguezs on Wowhead, who calculated the average Rusted Scrap yield from every viable Engineering item, and Kraybee, who sorted the data based on auction house prices.
At the time of writing, you can buy Handfuls of Severite Bolts from my server cluster’s auction house (on Silvermoon-EU) for less than nine Gold apiece. You get an average of one Pile of Rusted Scrap every time you pilfer five Handful of Severite Bolts, which works out to an average cost of around 45 Gold per Pile of Rusted Scrap.
You can also pilfer through five stacks of other Engineering-crafted items you don’t need, as they have a chance to give you more Piles of Rusted Scrap. You can see the full table of pilferable Engineering items on Wowhead. Additionally, with Khaz Algar Engineering, mobs in the world have a chance to drop Piles of Rusted Scrap, too.
How to use Pile of Rusted Scrap in WoW The War Within
In WoW The War Within, Piles of Rusted Scrap are a bind-on-pickup crafted Engineering item needed for many important recipes. Since they’re BoP, you can’t buy them from the auction house directly, so your only option is to get pilfering.
According to Wowhead, 36 Engineering recipes in The War Within need Piles of Rusted Scrap, including equippable armor, potion bombs, optional crafting reagents like the Energy Redistribution Beacon, and more.
