A whopping 135,000 concurrent players on Steam during the early access period showed the game’s potential. As reported by VG247, a significant jump took place on the full release on Sept. 9, with a high of over 235,000 concurrent players.

Space Marine 2 stands as the top-selling game on Steam, dethroning Black Myth Wukong from its perch, and the figure of over 235,000 concurrent players on Steam has shattered the record for games in the Warhammer franchise. The record was previously just shy of 167,000, set by Total War: Warhammer 3 two years ago.

Those figures are just the tip of the iceberg, however, as they do not take into consideration console players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. That could even further boost the number of concurrent players, though we’ll only know the full details when any sales data is revealed.

Space Marine 2’s stellar performance shows that tabletop games turned into video games have huge potential. The biggest example was Baldur’s Gate 3 in 2023, based on Dungeons & Dragons.

It opens the door for other developers to follow suit with their spin on an established series, potentially moving away from the push of launching their own IPs in a crowded market. The benefit of choosing a franchise like Warhammer, for example, is an already established audience.

The signs are extremely promising for Space Marine 2, and there is plenty more to come. The post-launch roadmap showcases new Operations, armor, and more that will arrive over the course of the year ahead.
