When CDPR released all-new modding tools for The Witcher 3 in late May, everyone knew big stuff was on the horizon. And, while it took some time, we might have one of the best Witcher 3 mods ever on our hands, allowing us to play as fully custom characters.
The mod, appropriately named “Custom Player Characters,” was uploaded to NexusMods on July 6 alongside a full trailer showcasing its many features. With it, Witcher players can choose any appearance from the game to supplant cranky old Geralt and customize their armor, clothing, and everything in between. For those who wish to ditch the sword-swinging Witcher gameplay, there is even a fully integrated magic combat system with customizable spells and effects.
To avoid the weirdness of having Doug Cockle’s stellar voice coming out of the mouth of Yennefer or any other female character, the modder even created a female version of Geralt’s voice lines that sound genuinely good. On the other hand, you can also play a female Witcher with moves just as flashy as Geralt’s to add some freshness to the regular Witcher 3 gameplay.
The mod is also fantastically integrated with the vanilla game, so swapping to Ciri during particular moments in the story is also seamless and doesn’t brick your game or save. However, some bugs are present, which the developer has outlined on the mod’s Nexus page.
Seeing as the mod can apparently be combined with any other appearance or custom quest mod (possible due to the new modding tools) the possibilities are limitless here. Parts of the mod can be used to create entirely new quest lines and stories where players can take the role of any given Witcher 3 side character and experience things from their own unique perspective. Nearly 10 years after the game launched, The Witcher 3 might just become the second coming of Skyrim with all the mods that might crop up in the coming years.
