During the Deputized mission in Starfield, you will find a very tempting ship just sitting around with no apparent owner. The Watchdog will be inaccessible, and you are likely wondering if there is a way to take it.

Why is the Watchdog inaccessible?

The Watchdog is inaccessible because it’s a prop for the story mission Deputized. It’s not meant for the player to fly it, unfortunately. As such, the ship simply cannot be entered.

It’s located on Montara Luna in the Cheyenne system as you try to help the Freestar Collective with your first real quest for them.

The mission involves tracking down a group of ruffians that have been running farmers off their land or killing them if they stay. It turns out they have stolen a valuable ship from Hope Tech. This is just the ship that happens to be here for this mission, and it seems the devs were not in the mood to give you a free ship as part of the Freestar Collective questline. If you are looking for a free ship, the Razorleaf is the way to go.

Can you come back and get the inaccessible Watchdog later?

Even if you come back later in the game, while the ship will still be there, you will not be able to get into it. Even if you rank up your piloting skill to the highest level, you can’t get into the ship at all. Sorry, folks!

You can actually purchase one of two better versions of the Watchdog: the aptly named Watchdog II and Watchdog III. They’re actually available in more than one spot, but, as spaceships, they can be pretty pricey. Of course, they’ll be cheaper if you have an upgraded Commerce skill.

Whichever Watchdog you’re after, they can be purchased from Inaya Rehman in the Hope Tech building’s lobby on the planet Polvo in the Valo system or from the Ship Technician at Akila City.

  • Watchdog II
    • Price: Roughly 87,000 Credits
  • Watchdog III
    • Price: Roughly 135,000 Credits

The primary differences between the Watchdog II and Watchdog III are minimal. The latter has a slightly healthier hull, a bit more cargo space, and a bit more shield strength. Considering the fact that you can modify any ship you own, this doesn’t matter too much if you’d rather soup up your Watchdog II any way you want.
