Starfield has a lot of cool ships, and eventually, you are either going to buy a bunch of them or luck into some through piracy. Others can be earned through quests for free. All of this is to say that you might need to sell some ships at some point.

The only way to sell ships in Starfield is through Ship Technicians. The first one you’ll ever have the chance to meet can be found in New Atlantis right next to where your ship lands.

Whoever you find, you’ll need to speak with them and then select the option “Let me see what ships you have for sale.” In this menu, you’ll look to the bottom right of the screen to find the “Sell” option. This is set to R by default on PC, and the Y button on controller.

If you venture out past New Atlantis for your ship selling, Ship Technicians can be found near just about every landing zone in major cities. One notable exception is Lon Andersson on the Red Mile. He can be found in the Red Mile building near the landing zone in his office. He’s also a great person to talk to if you’re looking to purchase a shielded cargo hold for your ship.

If you’re having trouble finding Ship Technicians, you can often find them near the Trade Authority kiosks that allow you to sell your goods.

When you’re in the menu that allows you to sell your ships, you will be able to see the value of the ship you own in the bottom left of the screen. To exchange the ship for credits, you’ll simply hit Enter on your keyboard or A on a controller. If your ship is unregistered because you stole it, you will need to pay a registration fee first. This will eat into your profits a bit.

Which ships should you sell?

Whether or not any ship is worth selling is entirely up to you. It’s a good idea to keep a number of ships in your inventory. You can use one with a large cargo hold for filling haulage jobs, and you’ll likely need a strong fighter with plenty of weapons to survive fierce battles. You might also need something with a large Grav Drive capacity so that you can travel long distances in one go — a boon toward the end of the game.

As you’re starting the game out, you might luck into some space battles where you dock with an enemy ship and fly it away for yourself. Selling ships like this can be a good way to earn credits that you could put toward one of the game’s best starter ships.

How to switch your Home Ship in Starfield

When you have more than one spaceship in your possession, the ship that you’re currently flying is referred to as your Home Ship. This is one way to switch ships, and whatever you set as your new Home Ship will automatically have all of the cargo held from your previous Home Ship transferred to it. So, if you had a lot of cargo, it means you’ll have to do some unloading before you can take off.

To change your Home Ship you’ll have to do the following:

  1. Speak to a Ship Technician
  2. Choose the “I’d like to view and modify my ships.” option
  3. Press C on PC or Menu on Xbox to select Make Home Ship

Presto! Your Home Ship has changed. While you’re changing your Home Ship, you might feel it’s time to rename your ship as well just to mix things up a bit.

Finally, you can never sell your home ship. You need at least one ship to be able to get around in Starfield, and the devs won’t let you strand yourself somewhere.
