While you’re off exploring the stars and traveling to faraway lands in Starfield, spacefarers need some time to themselves by hanging out in their own respective spaceships.
Ships are a reflection of one’s character, from playstyle to personality, and luckily, there are plenty of options to customize your ship.
There are a few ways to transform your ship into a home that you can be happy to return to after a long day of adventuring, but there are only a few different places where you can make lasting changes to help shape the space into one that you want as you float across the cosmos. Here is our guide on how to edit ship interiors in Starfield, and to leverage Starfield‘s in-game exploits to achieve a customized appearance
How to customize your ship’s interior in Starfield
To make significant changes to your ship’s interior, players will have to change the specific habitat for their ships and choose other brands for different looks within.
Head over to a spaceport and speak with a ship services technician. They are usually found right when you land your ship at the destination, whether it’s at New Atlantis or beyond. Afterward, you’ll want to ask to view and modify your ships, which should bring up your fleet on screen and the ship you wish to customize.
How to Get HABs in Starfield
Once you’ve chosen the ship you want to change, press the Ship Builder option to open up the next menu, which should allow you to find new habitats to customize your ship with. Different branded habitats will feature different styles of interior, but overall, they act more like a template players must then manually enter and place down decorations as they see fit. You can easily flip through these variations using the D-pad’s right or left buttons, allowing you to find the perfect customized vibe for your living quarters.
So, how do you get your hands on these different HABs? Well, it’s all about who you chat with. Seek out different Ship Services Technicians or module salespeople, and they’ll each have their own special assortment of habitats, usually not found anywhere else.
For added convenience, think about constructing an Outpost with a Landing Pad that includes a Shipbuilder. This nifty setup lets you access all your unlocked habitat modules right from your settlement, saving you the hassle of traveling to distant planets.
You need to be careful where you connect the HABs. For example, if you place a door where your bed used to be, the bed will be automatically removed. This might happen with the Frontier if you attach another habitat module to the starboard side of the existing one. It’s worth mentioning that experimenting with different ship configurations doesn’t incur any costs. Also, if you decide to remove a module and replace it with a different version of the same module, it won’t cost you anything, either.
How to decorate your ship’s living quarters in Starfield
Afterward, you’ll have to jump into your ship and place down any decorations that you wish to adorn your space with.
Whether you want a few plants to help add some life and color, some trophies to adorn your shelves to show off to any visitors, or a small plushie on the dashboard of your ship cockpit like me, you can add little inklings of personality onto your ship as you wish. Here is how to place your item:
- Add a decorative item to the inventory.
- Go back into the ship and select a HAB.
- Open your inventory and drop the decoration.
- Press and hold the A button (E key on PC) to grab the item.
- Rotate it using LT and RT (right-click/left-click on PC).
- Then place it on the container or shelf of your choice by pressing A (on console) or E (on PC).
Unfortunately, that is all the customizing you can really do for the interior of your ship. Another way to show off your gear is by adding an armory pod to your ship, and displaying some of your armor and weaponry.
But other than that, players cannot go into full detail while creating a very unique space, like adding full furniture and the like.
It isn’t known if Bethesda plans to add a ship customizing system in a future DLC, but for now, Starfield players will have to settle for some knick-knacks on their shelves.
How to save your ship’s interior in Starfield
Once you’ve finished decorating your ship, you should either activate an autosave or manually save the game immediately. This will guarantee that your carefully placed decorations won’t get moved or deleted once you reload the game. It’s important to be aware, though, that there is a slight chance that these items could be lost if the game encounters difficulties in restoring them to their precise positions.
Altering your Home Ship could result in decorations being reverted to the inventory.
