Can you respec skills in Starfield?

Choose wisely.

Naturally, players are wondering if you can undo skill choices, as this is a big decision that can completely alter the feel of your character. As your character levels up, you will be rewarded with skill points that you can spend to unlock bonuses in any of five categories: Physical, Social, Combat, Science, and Tech. So, what if you change your mind?

Can you refund skill points in Starfield?

Technically, you cannot refund skill points in Starfield. Once you make a decision, it is locked in permanently. I say technically because you can use console commands to change skills. You can add new skills with no exchange, or if you’d instead do so in a “fair” way, you can use console commands to remove specific skills and add others.

However, using console commands to change your character’s skills is NOT recommended, as doing so will mark your save as Modded. You will no longer be able to earn achievements on that file (strictly speaking, you can download a mod that removes the Modded label from your save, but let’s avoid that can of worms).

If you want to select different skills without cheating, you have only two options: either make a new character or beat the game on your current character to unlock New Game Plus, at which point all of your progression will reset.

One last option is to check any saves you’re willing to load and start over, but this previous resort would only work if you regretted your choice very quickly.

How to Respec in Starfield using Console Commands

This manner of respec-ing is a little odd, but if you genuinely desire the option, it gets the job done.

  1. Open the console using (‘) on PC
  2. Use command, “player.removeperk (Perk ID)” to remove a perk selection.
  3. Use command, “player.addperk (Perk ID)” to add a new perk selection.

As you can see, this method removes one of your sections, giving you a different choice in its place. These console commands are only available on PC, but luckily, players can transfer to and from PC and console.

Again, using console commands is not recommended because the achievements are turned off, but if achievements aren’t your thing, respec away.
