Overwatch hero Symmetra will undergo a “dramatic” redesign come summer—a change that’s been long overdue for the support hero.
But according to Overwatch lead software engineer Tim Ford, she won’t be classified as a support hero for much longer. After her rework, she’ll officially be a defense hero, Ford told Korean website Inven Global. This will be Symmetra’s second overhaul since the game’s release.

“We are discussing the change right now, and although we can’t tell you the details of each change, we would still like to let you know it will be a fairly dramatic change,” Ford said in an interview with the site. “One thing we can tell you is that Symmetra will turn from a support hero to a defense hero after the remake. Our aim is to make the usage of Symmetra even more flexible from it.”
Overwatch players often struggle to find a use for Symmetra. She’s classified currently as a support hero, but doesn’t do any healing, as other supports do. She supports the team in other ways, like with her Teleporter and Shield Generator. She’s the only Overwatch hero who hasn’t seen any play in the Overwatch League.
Blizzard yet has to share exact details on Symmetra’s rework, though Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan shared a screenshot on the Overwatch forum that hinted at some adjustments. The screenshot teases that Symmetra’s Teleport ultimate could become a normal cooldown ability, based on the number of players teleported (31) and teleport up-time.
It’s a bit too early to speculate, though; we’re still a ways out from seeing the Symmetra changes on the Overwatch test server. Kaplan said earlier in April that the rework will “most likely” be ready in the summer.
