Two Overwatch League teams have partnered up to create an off-season event, the California Cup. Los Angeles Valiant and San Francisco Shock will take the northern and southern California rivalries to a home-and-away format.
During the Overwatch League off-season, the two teams will host their own showcase events: one on Oct. 20 at Esports Arena Santa Ana, and the next on Nov. 10 at Esports Arena Oakland. Alongside the showcase matches, both teams will host “intimate meet-and-greet” events with the new rosters, amateur tournaments, exclusive merchandise, and free-to-play computers.

“We love the concept of finally bringing our matches to our home market in the Bay Area,” NRG ESports and San Francisco Shock president Brett Lautenbach said in a statement. “This is the first time an Overwatch League team is announcing a home market match outside of Los Angeles. What better way to kick this off than an incredible rivalry between the Valiant and Shock.”
The showcase events will continue throughout the Overwatch League, according to the press release. After each match, the victor will take over the California Cup until the next time they meet.
“No matter the competition, the rivalry between Southern California and Northern California is one that is full of passion for the fans and the teams involved,” Immortals and LA Valiant CEO Noah Whinston said. “We are excited to partner with the Shock in establishing a new tradition in esports.”
Tickets go on sale on Sept. 22, with three tiers available: general admission for $25 to either the Southern California event or the Northern California event, a $50 VIP package to either event, or a $75 PCH package that includes VIP access to both events.
