G2 Esports will not be one of the teams featured at IEM Gyeonggi, as the team decided to focus on the upcoming spring split rather than enter another tournament.
In an official announcement via the team’s website, G2 apologized for dissappointing fans who will not see them in a formal competition before the end of 2016, and offered the following reason as to why they declined the invite:
Upon the conclusion of the World Championship, G2’s management and the team sat down to discuss the plans for the future. With the 2017 EU LCS Spring Split just around the corner, it was decided that attending an event this soon would be detrimental to the growth process that the League of Legends section is undergoing.
G2 wants to perform at its best in the next LCS season, as this team has won the past two EU LCS playoffs over Origin and Splyce respectively and proved to be a force in European competitions.
The EU powerhouse exited the group stage at the World Championship, as the team’s pool was stacked with LCK Champions ROX Rigers and NA LCS second-seed Counter Logic Gaming.
With G2 re-signing its entire League of Legends roster and staff earlier in November, this move should not be interpreted as any lack of confidence in the roster, but rather a re-focusing for the team as it exits a successful 2016 campaign.
Do you think that G2 will benefit from missing out on IEM Gyeonggi and focusing on the next Spring Split?
