A new Magic: The Gathering Planeswalker was shown by Wizards of the Coast on Oct. 24 during the first Lost Caverns of Ixalan spoilers, featuring a powerful passive that supports Red archetypes and a new mechanic.
Many Legendary Planeswalkers lost their Spark during the events of the Phyrexian Multiverse war, while others gained one. The design move to reduce the number of Planeswalkers in Magic was a strategic one—and better for the TCG as a whole—since War of the Spark removed much of the excitement that came through a Planeswalker reveal. Dropping into the Standard format with Lost Caverns of Ixalan (LCI) on Nov. 17 is Quintorius Kand, a five-drop Planeswalker using a new MTG mechanic called Discover.
Quintorius Kand
Quintorius Kand has a starting loyalty of four as a Planeswalker and three loyalty abilities in conjunction with a passive ability.
- Casting cost: 3RW
- Type: Legendary Planeswalker—Quintorius
- Rarity: Mythic Rare
- Starting Loyalty: Four
- Passive ability: Whenever you cast a spell from exile, Quintorius Kand deals two damage to each opponent and you gain two life.
- Plus-one ability: Create a 3/2 Red and White spirit creature token.
- Minus-three ability: Discover Four.
- Minus-six ability: Exile any number of target cards from your graveyard. Add Red mana for each card exiled this way. You may play those cards this turn.
Drain and Gain strategies aren’t often found in the colors Red and White, but Quintorius Kand is changing that. The color Red is all about dealing direct burn damage to an opponent, along with gaining card advantage by exiling cards and then casting them. And the new mechanic Discover is all about exiling cards from the top of a player’s library, where they can then cast it for free.
Quintorius Kand supports Red strategies by dealing two damage to each opponent any time you cast a spell from exile. Plus, there’s the added bonus of gaining two life. The Planeswalker can protect itself through the tokens created, and Quintorius Kand’s ultimate is a game finisher.
Players can test out the Legendary Quintorius Kand through the launch of Lost Caverns of Ixalan in local game stores on Nov. 10.
