A now-deleted post by Epic Games has confirmed the launch date and two unannounced heroes for upcoming game Marvel Rivals.
It appears that Epic spilled the beans from an upcoming Gamescom announcement a bit early, but we snagged the image below from the post before it was gone. It features first looks at Captain America and Winter Soldier, who were previously leaked but not confirmed.
The post also revealed the game’s official launch date, and it’s just a few months away. After a closed alpha test and closed beta test earlier this year, the game is nearly ready for launch.
“The official launch of Marvel Rivals is set for December 6, 2024,” the post said. “Assemble your ultimate all-star squad of Super Heroes and Super Villains! Unleash unique powers across a dynamic lineup of destructible maps from across the Marvel Rivals Multiverse.”
In a surprise to many, the post closed out by mentioning that “all heroes will be unlocked and free at launch and beyond,” answering a question that many gamers had about the free-to-play hero shooter.
The discussion about the accidental leak spread quickly to the game’s official Discord server, where moderators were frantically deleting any mention of the Epic post.
More information about Marvel Rivals and any other announcements from the team is set to come later today at Gamescom, both at Opening Night Live at 1pm CT and a livestream by NetEase Games at 4pm CT.
Unfortunately for some fans, it appears that Epic spoiled the surprise for everyone. But fortunately for gamers, the title is only a few short months away, so the wait is not significantly long for fans of the hero shooter genre or Marvel in general.
It’s still worth tuning in to today’s shows for a first look at whatever trailers and information will be shown.
Update on Aug. 20 at 2:10pm CT: The full trailer from Gamescom has been revealed, showing off the heroes, the new Intergalactic Republic of Wakanda, and confirming the release date and hero price news.
