The ranked ladder in League of Legends is going to look a little different by the end of March. Earlier this month, Riot Games announced positional ranks would officially be removed from the game along with a partial rank reset for high elo players. Now Riot has released more details addressing when these changes will be made and how they will impact players.

With the removal of positional ranks, players will keep their highest rank. In addition to removing positional ranks, players ranked above Diamond will have their ladder position rolled back slightly too. When Riot Games introduced Iron and Grandmaster to the ranked ladder, it created a bug which allowed some undeserving players to reach Grandmaster. On top of that, another bug allowed some Diamond players to climb when they shouldn’t have been able to do so.

Due to these two bugs, ranks will be adjusted for high elo players. The reset will mean Master players will remain in Masters but start with zero LP. Additionally, Diamond players will be demoted one division while the Grandmaster and Challenger ranks will be temporarily locked. Ed “SapMagic” Altorfer, the lead metagame system designer for League of Legends, recently shared more information about the rank reset in a series of tweets.

Diamond players in promos will remain in their series but still drop down a division. This means a player in Diamond 3 promos will drop down to Diamond 4 promos. For a player in Diamond 4, if they aren’t in promos they will reset to Diamond 4 with zero LP. For now, there’s no timeframe of when these rank changes will take place. SapMagic said they are aiming to make changes before the end of the month and possibly as soon as March 19.
