Scott Cawthon, the creator of the Five Nights at Freddy’s series, has been on a roll this week, revealing a bunch of new projects and uncovering some of the series’ greatest lore mysteries—including the infamous mystery box at the end of FNAF 4.
In an interview with Youtuber Dawko on Aug. 4, Scott discussed various topics related to his work on the games and the series and, finally, after nine years, the infamous locked box that appears at the end of the credits in FNAF 4.
For those looking for some big reveal or to finally put the theories to rest, as it turns out, even Cawthon doesn’t know or remember.
“There is something in the box, but I never pursued that, and I don’t know if I can find it again,” Cawthon told Dawko. “And I think that’s the best answer that I can possibly give for that.”
Cawthon continued, saying his answer might not be satisfying, and those watching the video might not be happy. He discussed how he put the pieces in place for the box for an eventual conclusion, but the story went in a different direction.
Essentially, he attributes the box to an idea that never got fulfilled, was lost to time, and would likely never see an outcome.
