In Crypt Custodian, you play as Pluto, a black cat that’s been banished to cleaning up the afterlife for all of eternity. With your trusty broom, you’ll sweep up fearsome soot monsters and piles of garbage, all while befriending mischievous ghouls and exploring a gorgeously expansive map.

Developer Kyle Thompson, who also created Islets and Sheepo, announced today that Crypt Custodian releases on Aug. 27 for PC and console. Players will be able to play the game on older-gen consoles in addition to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

The game blends a bit of platforming with action-adventure elements. Throughout your journey in the afterlife, you’ll purchase skills to customize your attacks, upgrade your gear, solve puzzles, use new movement abilities to explore hidden areas of the map, and take down dangerous bosses as you plan to overthrow the Afterlife Guardian. Because of course, the goal of a cat game is for the cat to become the king of something, anything at all. It’s a whole lot of mischievous fun, so if you’re a fan of Metroidvanias, you’ll definitely want to check this one out.

If you’re still not purrsuaded by all that Crypt Custodian has to offer, you can give the game a go on Steam right now through its free demo. The demo lets users play through the early stages of the game and get a feel for its combat, movement, and upgrade systems at no cost. You can also wishlist the game on the digital storefront of your choice to get all the latest news about it prior to its release.
