Does R.E.P.O. have an ending?

Is there any escape from the Taxman?

R.E.P.O. is a hit new survival horror game taking over Steam right now, tasking players with surviving levels with monsters as they look for items to sell before moving onto the next level.

As you progress, the number of extraction points increases as does the level of difficulty, the number of monsters per map, and the number of valuable items. If you haven’t been upgrading your character or working together well with other players, you won’t last long the further you dive in.

That does beg the question, though, what is the overall plot, and does it have an ending you are trying to reach?

Like other early access games, R.E.P.O. currently does not have an ending. Instead, players continuously go from level to level, spawning inside a randomly generated version of one of the three available maps, until they eventually die and have to restart from level one all over again.

Most players only make it until level six before they perish or lose a run, forcing them to start over again, with only the best bots able to get further into the double-digits. So, we don’t blame you for wondering if an ending exists because it’s very difficult to get to some of the further levels as you play—without either being good or cheating.

R.E.P.O. continues indefinitely, where it’s possible to get to level 100 and beyond. There is no final level to this game, which only fuels the nightmare further, resembling Einstein’s theory of insanity. While this is mostly achieved through god mode, level 100 isn’t too far from what you may have experienced if you reached level 20. This is because there are set caps to the difficulty and upgrades you can get. Interestingly, developer semiwork, sees level 10 and above as R.E.P.O.‘s late-game.

You can continuously upgrade your stats, but there’s no reason to once you hit the strength limit, swapping your priority to having the most health possible to survive each level. While more monsters join the fray as you progress through the levels, their quantity eventually caps out (around level 15) and the number of extraction points becomes limited to four (from level six).

Does REPO end?

With a main goal similar to Lethal Company—to try and get as far as possible until you eventually die— R.E.P.O. offers a Game Over ending with its King of the Losers battle inside the Disposal Arena. This is skipped if you’re playing solo. When every player dies in a level, and you get a game over after failing to pay the taxman, all players are dropped into an area and forced to fight one another to be the last one standing. The lone survivor is called the King of the Losers and gets a tiny gold crown that sits on the character’s head during their next run.

You could argue that the Game Over ending is a bad ending, but it isn’t complete nor it tells us much about the world and why we are little robots collecting valuables for a sentient taxman, who we never see or hear from outside of the random emoji-themed message.

Semiwork confirmed on the official YouTube channel on March 14 that new content is inbound, including a fourth level: the Museum. With more labyrinths to explore and mysterious lore to uncover from inside the jaws of death, we wonder if R.E.P.O. will get a satisfying conclusion as semiwork continues to develop this indie gem.
