Baldur’s Gate 3’s party size is restricted for both single and multiplayer modes. As you find new companions in your campaign, you are forced to pick favorites after you reach the cap, but you can swap allies as you wish. Regardless of how many companions you have, you’ll always be locked to the cap of four characters.
There have been some questions about this system, though, as players find they can have up to 10 companions at a time but can’t get close to using them all. Here’s our guide to party sizes in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Baldur’s Gate 3 max party size
Baldur’s Gate 3’s max party size is four characters, regardless if you are using companions or real players, playing alone or in co-op multiplayer. This means your character counts as the first one, and you can have any mix of three companions or three other real players in your party.
Developer Larian puts such restrictions in place because the game is balanced around four characters in a party. If players somehow find a way to increase that number, the campaign becomes easier than intended.
Increasing the party size cap in Baldur’s Gate 3
You can only go beyond party size limits in Baldur’s Gate 3 using mods, which will alter the game files to take that number to six, eight, or even 10. But this will only affect the single-player mode. Even with mods, it’s impossible to break the party size cap in co-op multiplayer in Baldur’s Gate 3.
These mods can be found on third-party websites and are not on the Steam Workshop at the time of writing. They usually involve downloading a file and placing it in the main installation path of Baldur’s Gate 3 on your PC, manually modifying game files, or both. Be careful, because modifying certain files may break your game or even corrupt your save data. Always find a way to back up your save before modifying game files.
If you’re playing on GeForce NOW, you can’t install mods since you don’t have access to the file explorer of the computer running the game.

Will Baldur’s Gate 3 base party size ever increase?
Developer Larian hasn’t shared plans for increasing Baldur’s Gate party size cap yet. If the devs were planning to do so, they probably would have done it for the game’s full release on Aug. 3, when they kept it at four. I personally can only see the developers increasing that number if they release an expansion or special campaign that’s tailored for bigger parties, like six or eight characters, but that’s only a personal theory.
Many fans were hoping that developer Larian Studios would increase the limit of four party members for the full launch of the game. Alas, that has not come to pass, as the maximum party size has remained at four for the official release of Baldur’s Gate 3. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to fans of the Divinity games, though, as Larian Studios developed those as well. The max party size in the Divinity games is four, too.

The previous two Baldur’s Gate games allow for party sizes of up to six members, however. This gives players dozens of party composition options, which was a beloved feature in the community.
