I truly believe the best Fortnite skins are the ones I don’t have to pay for. That’s why I’m always on the lookout for free skins, which fortunately come up quite often—at least once every two or three months.

As there are thousands of paid looks for Fortnite, over the years there have been a few free items players could acquire to spice up their appearance in the game. These free skins have been delivered in a variety of methods, from simple quests to one-time events, and most have been limited to a short timeframe.

If you want to spice things up without spending any cash in Fortnite, here is a rundown of what your options for free skins are today.

The best way to grab free Fortnite skins today is through completing in-game quests or connecting your account to external services.

Fortnite has offered free skins to players who finish specific missions while playing since its early stages, and this approach hasn’t changed. Epic now often saves these exclusive giveaways for the launch of new game modes, like giving away the Trailblazer Tai Outfit for completing certain LEGO Fortnite quests or the Jackie Outfit for participating in Rocket Racing.

Additionally, linking your Epic account with various external services, like your console account or LEGO Insiders, is another method. Often, you can snag unique skins simply by engaging with these external platforms, such as the special skins available through PlayStation Plus subscriptions or the LEGO Insiders Explorer Emile outfit.

Event rewards

The easiest way to get free skins is by playing Fortnite during an event. Sometimes, Epic Games will run promotions tasking players with completing specific tasks with the reward of a free look. In the past, this has been used for even the biggest skin collaborations such as Star Wars. Of course, this isn’t always an option, but it’s worth keeping an eye on the Fortnite lobby screen to see what challenges are up for grabs.

Tournaments and Cup skins

Relax! This isn’t any high-level competition you need to win. Fortnite holds periodic in-game cup events with the reward of new skins up for grabs if you place highly. While these events are held frequently, they don’t always feature free skins, and most of the time just include loading screens, gliders, or other cosmetics. Still, it’s worth always keeping an eye on what rewards are available for the top performers.

Subscription exclusive skins

If you’re a member of a service such as PlayStation Plus or Prime Gaming, there are often free Fortnite skins available to redeem. Of course, these aren’t entirely free given you’re paying a subscription elsewhere, but you won’t need any V-Bucks to get them.
