Fortnite: Battle Royale is set to receive a new in-game tournament system, which will bring live leaderboards and multiple knockout rounds during events, according to an Epic employee’s Reddit post.

Colin Fogle, an Epic esports designer, explained on the Fortnite: Battle Royale subreddit Tuesday why there were fewer in-game tournaments scheduled than usual. Fogle said that the developer would implement a new backend system for tournaments sometime in January, which will “create a richer variety of events to keep the experience fresh and exciting.”

In early January, there will be fewer tournaments because of this, but a more frequent event schedule will return after the new system is added and the inevitable bugs are worked out.

In addition to “pop-up cups,” Epic held the Winter Royale tournament in November and December using its in-game tournaments tab. The event, which split the European and North American competitors, featured a collective $1 million prize.

The Winter Royale was the first major event Epic hosted using the in-game system, a feature introduced in October. Other events on the tab have not included cash prizes, but rather virtual pins that players can show off on their profiles.

With qualifiers for the Fortnite World Cup presumably set to begin sometime in the next several months, it appears Epic is attempting to improve the events tab in order to handle the qualification process.
