Fortnite: Battle Royale players on PlayStation 4 will now have access to full cross-platform play.
Sony Interactive Entertainment president and global CEO John Kodera announced an open beta for Fortnite cross-platform play between PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PC, and Mac starting today.
Sony has been notoriously strict with its cross-platform play options, despite other consoles and companies allowing its players full access to a game’s capabilities.

“For 24 years, we have strived to deliver the best gaming experience to our fans by providing a uniquely PlayStation perspective,” Kodera wrote in a post on the PlayStation blog. “Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform.”
This means that Fortnite players on PlayStation 4 will be able to battle against Xbox One and Nintendo Switch users, but also continue progress on their Epic account should they choose to switch between PlayStation 4 and another console.
Fans have been unhappy with Sony’s decision to block PlayStation-linked accounts from logging into other devices. Of course, now all of that should change once the PlayStation 4 open beta kicks in. It’s not immediately clear how players can sign up for the Fortnite cross-platform beta on PlayStation 4, however.
It’s a “major policy change” for Sony. The company expects the process to be an ongoing effort. More details, including information on the beta time-frame, will be released soon. The decision to allow cross-platform play for Fortnite opens up the possibility for other games on the PlayStation 4 system, and Kodera said that’ll be addressed in due time.
