If you want to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate online with a friend on the same console against other players across the world, prepare to be disappointed.

The only option available at this time is a two-player co-op mode in the game’s matchmaking. This mode will match you up with two other players from across the globe in a random ruleset, so there’s no way to get your ideal matchup.
There also isn’t a way to play with your friend on the same console against other players online at the time of writing.

The only thing you could do is set up a friend-only Battle Arena and take turns fighting against friends from across the globe in one-on-one battles. Sadly, that isn’t quite as good as having a guest play alongside you.
Let’s hope that Nintendo adds a co-op feature in the near future, though. But by the looks of it, there’s no way that’s happening at the moment with all of the other online issues plaguing this game.
