Two of the best Injustice 2 players in the world earned a shot at redemption on Saturday.
Denom “A F0xy Grampa” Jones and Christian “ForeverKing” Quiles survived a last chance qualifier tournament on Saturday to earn places in the ELEAGUE Injustice 2 World Championship. These are the final two players to earn spots in the $250,000 televised championship tournament.
F0xy went undefeated to emerge from the winners bracket, while ForeverKing bounced back from a winners semifinal loss to F0xy to top the losers bracket. Because there were no prizes at stake beyond the ELEAGUE berths, the grand final was not contested.
“I’m happy to be here and happy to finally succeed in something,” F0xy said in an interview following his winners final triumph.
For both players, Saturday’s last chance qualifier was a shot at redemption.
Both F0xy and ForeverKing were among the 16 players who competed in last month’s $200,000 Injustice Pro Series Finals, but both players went 0-2 at the event and tied for 13th place. Only the top eight finishers at the Pro Series Finals qualified directly for the ELEAGUE championship event.
“Going 0-2 at [the Pro Series Finals] really hurt,” ForeverKing said in a post-match interview. “But I knew this was gonna be my last chance, my last tournament. So I put in so much effort, so many hours of practice, and I’m so happy it paid off.”
The success of F0xy and ForeverKing came at the expense of Marios “Nivek” Bitsikokos, who finished third at the event. He lost to F0xy 3-1 in the winners final, then fell to ForeverKing by the same scoreline the losers final.
For Nivek, it was another case of coming up just short. He finished the Injustice Pro Series season in 17th place, one spot shy of a place in the Pro Series Finals.
If it’s of any comfort to Nivek, he won’t be the only top Injustice 2 player not in the ELEAGUE field.
Nicolas “whiteBoi” Andersen, who finished the Pro Series season in fifth place but also went 0-2 in the Finals, placed fourth at the last chance qualifier. Brad “Scar” Vaughn and Richard “iLuusions” Luu, both of whom finished tied for ninth at the Pro Series Finals, tied for ninth this weekend. And VSFighting champion Matthew “Biohazard” Commandeur was eliminated in a tie for 25th place.
The ELEAGUE Injustice 2 World Championship is slated to begin this coming Friday. Group play will take place on Oct. 27 and Nov. 3, with the finals slated for Nov. 10. All matches will be streamed on ELEAGUE’s Twitch channel, with the later stages of each day’s competition simulcast on TBS.
