The 2024 edition of Destiny 2‘s Guardian Games introduced quite the prize: The Skimmer, a hoverboard that lets guardians grind, fly, and pull off different tricks, and in almost every way is better than the Sparrow.
Skimmers take up the same slot as a sparrow but are closer to the Cloudstriders’ hoverboards that we see on Neomuna. This vehicle type has more tricks than your standard Destiny 2 vehicle, feeling more like a Warframe K-Drive than a Sparrow. You can even fly with it (or, more accurately, grind the air around you), making for a perfect (and stylish) way to traverse large areas.
The game’s inaugural Skimmer was the Allstar Vector from the 2024 Guardian Games, which arrived with Update 7.3.5. The same patch also added the Winged Wolf Skimmer to the Eververse Store, available in a bundle for 2,500 Silver.
Here’s how you can get your hands on your first Skimmer in Destiny 2.
How to unlock and equip a Skimmer in Destiny 2
If you didn’t complete the Best in Class and Drop In quests during Guardian Games 2024, the only way to get a Skimmer is to purchase one through the Eververse Store.
Bungie added a Skimmer to the Eververse with Update 7.3.5. The Winged Wolf hoverboard is inspired by the iconic Gjallarhorn rocket launcher and is available as part of the Gjallarheart bundle for 2,500 Silver. Bungie also added a new armor set for each class, also inspired by Gjallarhorn and sold for the game’s premium currency.
The steep price tag gets you a hoverboard/Skimmer, a Ghost Shell, a ship, and a shader. This vehicle may rotate into the Bright Dust shop in the future, but for the time being, it’s only available for Silver. The Eververse shop may also see more Skimmers in the future.
Guardian Games 2024 ran until March 26 so if you didn’t complete the Best In Class quest in time, you’re out of luck and can’t get your hands on the Allstar Vector Skimmer. It may return in a future version of Guardian Games.
How to use a Skimmer in Destiny 2
To use the new vehicle type, open your inventory and equip it where you would pick your Sparrow. Then, summon it like a normal vehicle (though with a lot more style), and you’ll be surfing around in no time.
Aside from the standard boost option, players can opt to switch to a grind by pressing the crouch button. The guardian then switches their stance on the Skimmer and begins to surf the leylines of the world. Grinding lasts an incredibly long time and enables guardians to reach locations that would otherwise be difficult to access.
Pressing the crouch button again switches back to standard use. There is a short delay between switching from regular to grind, and you aren’t able to dismount the Skimmer while grinding, so be sure you’re in a safe location before switching and jumping off your Skimmer.
