Thankfully for CoD fans, there’s an explanation for why the update is so big for Season Five Reloaded in MW3 and Warzone, and it’s full of genuinely good news in the future despite how inconvenient it may be at the time of waiting around to play.

Here’s all the info on why MW3 and Warzone’s Aug. 21 update is so huge.

The Season Five Reloaded update for MW3 and Warzone on Aug. 21, 2024, is so large because it is the beginning part of a process of improving the install size of Call of Duty games moving forward and leading into Black Ops 6.

“This initial download will not permanently add the stated file size to the storage space that Call of Duty takes up on your device,” Activision said. “The update is reorganizing game files and adding new tech to prep the way for the full player interface arriving in October. Once complete, Call of Duty’s footprint will decrease due to these file optimizations.”

As part of CoD’s future, the Call of Duty HQ app is being reorganized and optimized with an all-new, improved UI, as shown in the image below. This massive update is just part of that process.

The download is one, massive file for players on Xbox and PC, but for PS5 players, it will be separated into four separate and different installs because of how the console organizes files differently.

PS5 players will acquire this update via four separate downloads,” Activision said. “The initial download will be similar to other updates that are needed before booting up Call of Duty. The next update will be triggered within the Call of Duty experience – a download when first accessing Modern Warfare 3 or Call of Duty: Warzone. After the second update is completed, there will be another download when accessing MW3 and a final download when accessing Warzone.

This means, for PS5 players, you will need to download one regular update, re-download Content Pack 1, re-download Multiplayer Pack 1, Shared Content Packs, and re-download Warzone if you wish to play the battle royale mode, too.

“As a thank you to the community” for the massive download, Activision is giving away a slew of free tokens, including 10 one-hour double XP tokens, 10 one-hour double weapon XP tokens, and 10 battle pass tier skips.

These can be used in MW3 or Warzone and will be delivered once players log on after the Season Five Reloaded update.
