The next evolution of Call of Duty is here with Modern Warfare 2.
The Infinity Ward-developed project looks set to raise the stakes for the sequel to 2019’s Modern Warfare, and the Call of Duty Next event in September gave fans plenty to chew on, from new maps and game modes to release dates and more.
Set across the world, MW2 looks to recapture the globe-trotting magic of its namesake, 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, with a sprawling campaign for players to dig into. In addition to the new campaign, however, players can expect a new version of CoD’s hugely popular battle royale, Warzone 2.
Warzone’s massive initial popularity has trailed off in the last year or so, with many players migrating to other games and battle royales. A revamp of the game is necessary if CoD wants to reclaim some of its lost audience on streaming sites, where the battle royale version of the game outpaces the campaign and other multiplayer modes of different CoD games the vast majority of the time.
With so much news about the newest CoD, including the official announcement of Warzone 2, most people just have one question: When can you play the game? Thankfully, it’s not long from now.
What is the Warzone 2 release date?
Warzone 2 will release on Nov. 16 of this year. The developers made the official announcement of the release date at the CoD Next event, a massive livestream where the future of the franchise was revealed.
Keeping up with tradition, Warzone 2 will likely go live at or around 12pm CT on Nov. 16, so clear your schedules for that afternoon and evening.
That wasn’t all the devs announced, though, with news that Warzone 2 will arrive complete with a new map to play on, Al Mazrah, as well as exciting changes to the way the games will play. There’s even a new mode that drops alongside the new version of Warzone, an Escape from Tarkov-like extraction mode titled DMZ.
Warzone 2 will be quite different from the original game. When players showed off the title at CoD Next, the map featured MW2’s new swimming mechanics, the gas circles split into different zones, the Gulag is now two-vs-two, and much more.
All in all, there will be plenty of content for CoD fans to look forward to in the next couple of months. Season 01 of MW2 will launch with Warzone 2 on Nov. 16, and the Season 01 Reloaded update will arrive less than a month later.
