While playing online multiplayer is the way of the present and the future, nothing quite compares to the cozy feeling of couch co-op gameplay. While Modern Warfare 2, unfortunately, does not feature a co-op campaign option, you can still get your split-screen CoD fix in local and online multiplayer.
You can play split-screen MW2 in Private Matches and a selection of Online Multiplayer modes
Yes, split-screen is available in Modern Warfare 2 but only on console and your second player will need their own PlayStation or Xbox profile. Player two will also need an Activision account but you can make one nearer the time if necessary.
Unfortunately, there is no option for playing the normal MW2 campaign in split-screen mode. Stranger still, split-screen is also not supported in the co-op Spec Ops mode. On the plus side, you can play a number of Modern Warfare 2‘s multiplayer game modes in split-screen Private Matches and even Online Multiplayer modes.

How to use split-screen in Modern Warfare 2
Enabling the split-screen mode in Modern Warfare 2 is simple. Make sure you have access to two controllers and two Xbox or PlayStation profiles, then follow these steps:
- Load up the Modern Warfare 2 main menu then turn your second controller on
- Follow the prompt in the top right corner and press X or A to sign in
- Select the profile that player two will be playing on
- Create or log in on the second Activision account when prompted
- Select a private match lobby or begin searching for online matches
Pro tip: before searching for online matches, make sure that your second player has created some custom weapon loadouts!
Best multiplayer modes for Modern Warfare 2 split-screen
If you’re hoping to play online multiplayer using split-screen, you’re in luck. Some modes, like Free-For-All, are not supported and you’ll get a warning asking you to remove the second player. However, you can play all of the following MW2 modes while in split-screen and have endless fun:
- Search and Destroy
- Team Deathmatch
- Kill Confirmed
- Headquarters
- Hardpoint
- Domination
- Knock Out
Pro tip: We tried using Quick Play while in split-screen and were prompted to remove the second player because we still had Free-For-All selected. Once FFA was removed, Quick Play worked perfectly.
If you just want to play against your split-screen partner, setting up a private match is the way to go!
