The Borderlands movie premiered worldwide on Aug. 9, but its opening weekend was far from financially successful, leading some to wonder what the film’s budget was—and we’ve got the answer.
The latest Eli Roth production made only $8,800,000 on its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo, which, for a summer blockbuster, is a horrible result, especially when paired with Borderlands’ awful reviews. If the film’s earnings don’t improve, it may not cover its giant production budget.
How much did the Borderlands movie cost to make?
Lionsgate Films hasn’t officially revealed how much Borderlands cost to make. With a bunch of CGI effects and a star-studded cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Black, many fans expected the budget to be relatively high. And it seems they were right. The Borderlands movie cost $115 million to make, according to Variety.
If this is true, the film only saw a 13 percent return on its budget in the opening weekend. Usually, summer blockbusters make the most money during opening weekend. With that in mind, it is unlikely Borderlands will suddenly start attracting more people to cinemas in the coming weeks, which means Lionsgate could see a loss for this production.
Atrocious reviews certainly don’t aid Borderlands‘ promotion. Initial opinions called the movie “a disaster” and a “lifeless, unfunny, and visually repulsive dud with annoying characters and a cast with not one ounce of chemistry.” Unfortunately, following opening weekend, these reviews haven’t improved.
At the time of writing, the film has a nine percent Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes and an Audience Score of just 50 percent.
