From goblins to celestials, Baldur’s Gate 3 players want more ‘exotic’ playable races

We need these races, pronto!

Baldur’s Gate 3 players are starting to grow tired of playing as the same few character styles and races and are now begging Larian Studios to introduce more unique race choices, especially those that appear in Dungeons & Dragons.

BG3 has remained immensely popular for more than a year because most playthroughs are so different, with many fans choosing to play several times through. One thing doesn’t change in though—every character must be built out of the same few playable races, leading many to today declare they want to see way more races added.

BG3 players were quick to voice nearly every race under the sun, but there were a few clear winners in the community’s poll on Reddit: Goblins, hobgoblins, Aasimars, and Tabaxi, all of which are certainly “unique.”

Some would work a little better than others; in BG3, there are already multiple goblin and hobgoblin NPCs. Players would love to see these oft-enemy humanoid creatures become playable, mostly because “they’re neat” and would open up a whole new range of roleplay options and amusing dialogue choices.

The more difficult races to bring into BG3 would be the Aasimars and Tabaxi. If you’re unfamiliar with D&D, Aasimars are humanoid plane-touched (often descended from celestials) and Tabaxi are humanoid felines. The latter skirts quite close to the Elder Scroll‘s Khajiit race. While these would require more work, their abilities, characteristics, story, and roleplaying options would only enhance BG3’s story.

While all of this sounds incredible, Larian has mentioned there’s no plans for future DLC packs, expansion releases, or any more D&D content, so it’s unlikely we’d ever actually get more races officially added to the RPG in updates.

What’s more likely is BG3 players pick up the race design mantle; Larian is introducing full mod support in Patch Seven, so mods could bring everything from goblins to celestials and cats to the playable BG3 ranks soon enough.

As for my new BG3 race pick, I think Genasi would be incredible to play. Who doesn’t love the idea of being an elemental with characteristics linked to their elements?
