Baldur’s Gate 3 presents players very rough choices with one of the hardest being the fight against Balthazar in your attempts to save the Nightsong.
Your searches within Moonrise Towers will lead you to the Nightsong, where you will be presented with two options: either kill her or save her. Read on to learn how to save the Nightsong and defeat Balthazar.
What is the Nightsong in BG3?
In Moonrise Towers, you will be tasked to help Balthazar find The Nightsong in the Gauntlet of Shar, which is the source of Ketheric Thorm’s invulnerability.
Killing the Nightsong is a great way to defeat Balthazar, however if you do not want to slay an innocent being and best Balthazar, there are alternative ways to achieve removing the immortality and saving the Shadow-Cursed Lands.
The Gauntlet of Shar can be tricky to enter and will need to complete various puzzles to obtain the four Umbral Gems in order to access it.
Interacting with the pool of water within the depths is signaling the game that you are ready. It is a point of no return where you’ll be teleported to a whole new realm. Nothing will be accessible from Act One, including the Underdark and Mountain Pass. So, make sure to be prepared before heading within.
How to beat Balthazar and save the Nightsong in BG3
The first step you need to defeat Balthazar is to position your party accordingly.
Approaching Balthazar will group your party together and you all will be left extremely vulnerable to his AOE attacks.
If you have Astarion, Karlach and Shadowheart in your party, you can try this set up.
- Using Misty Step, move yourself and Astarion to the right ledge above where Balthazar and the Nightsong are, then bring Karlach into a decent range for melee and move Shadowheart away from any edges.
Avoiding all the edges is crucial, as you can easily be shoved off and killed, but you can use that to your advantage too with characters like Karlach with high strength.
Focus early attacks on Balthazar himself unless there are enemies that you could push off the edge, using any high-damage abilities and spells. Put arrows with additional effects to good use and used AOE wherever possible.
If you have Gale/Wyll or Lae’zel in your party, you can try these set ups.
- Place Gale or Wyll and Lae’zel right next to Balthazar (the left side of Balthazar near the beginning of the battle). Have Gale or Wyll use Thunderwave and Fist from the rock formation to the right. This will knock enemies off of their feet and into the chasm. Lae’zel or any hard hitting melee character will be able to bash Balthazar hard with their attacks.
Balthazar is vulnerable to melee attacks, though he is difficult to hit in this way due to his teleport ability, so make sure you have some party members with decent ranged attacks to inflict regular damage.
Once Balthazar is defeated, you will have to deal with the undead that are left. By this stage, however, many of your party members will be low on health, so if Shadowheart is around, use her to heal your and the party.
We also advise using any summons you can. While they may not offer the best damage output, they will draw in the attacks of enemies—which can be vital to keeping your party alive until the end of the fight.
