Traveling in Diablo 4 can take a long time. Luckily, a mount option in the game allows you to ride horses and travel faster across regions. The ability to get a horse is tied to a mission named Mount: Donan’s Favor, and this Priority Quest will become available after you start Act Four.

If you find yourself covering long distances on foot and passing dangerous creatures dwelling in the shadows of Sanctuary, completing this quest as soon as possible can be a real lifesaver.

Diablo 4 Donan’s Favor quest guide 2024

Here’s how to start and complete the Mount: Donan’s Favor quest in Diablo 4, and stop worrying about those pesky mobs that attack you while you’re trying to get from point A to point B.

When can you start Mount: Donan’s Favor in Diablo 4?

As we mentioned, you won’t get a mount right off the bat and will need to progress to Act Four to trigger the mission that unlocks horses. So, until you make it to Diablo 4 Act Four, you’ll have to rely on mobility spells for occasional jumps and speed boosts (or, if you’re a Necromancer, you’ll be counting the time until you can get a trusty steed).

The Donan’s Favor mission only opens up after you’ve completed Act Three, The Making of Monsters. This act is on the beefier side, so it may be a while before you find yourself traveling at the speed of light. You will know you are close when you acquire the story quest “Exhumed Relics,” the final quest in Act Three.

On the flip side, this is a simple and quick quest that should get you mounted up and ready for action as soon as you hit Act Four. I recommend prioritizing the Mount: Donan’s Favor quest as soon as you start the Act Four questline since it will drastically speed up your questing, leveling, and farming.

After reaching Act Four in the campaign, you’ll get a mission called A Gathering Storm in Diablo 4. For this mission, you must travel to Kyovashad and interact with Donan at the Cathedral of Light. After talking with him, Donan will task you with talking to the stable master about a steed. Check the map image above to see the exact location of the stable master in Kyovashad.

The stable master, Oskar, will await you at the Stables. You need to interact with him and select the dialogue option, “I’m a friend of Donan’s.” This automatically unlocks the mount option, and you can purchase a Horse from the stable master. For players who have the Digital Deluxe and Ultimate Edition, you will get the Light-Bearer and Temptation mounts. Along with them, you will also get the Caparison of Faith and Hellborn Carapace mount armors to choose from.

Here’s a quick summary of the quest and its requirements.

  • Complete Act Three.
  • In Act Four, you will receive a mission called “A Gathering Storm.”
  • Travel to Kyovashad.
  • Visit Oskar at the Stables in Kyovashad.
  • Select “I’m a friend of Donan’s” dialogue option.
  • Travel to Cathedral of Light and speak to Donan.

If you don’t own the Digital Deluxe or Ultimate Editions (or want more horses to add to your stables), you can talk to any Stablemaster to purchase two mounts: the Grey Steed and the Mottled Steed. Each horse costs 20,000 gold, which should be easy enough to obtain by the time you’ve unlocked Mount: Donan’s Favor. To see them, click the Vendor tab at the top of the screen.

The same can be said for the War-Cat mount included in the Ultimate Edition of Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred, the first expansion for the game that launched in October 2024.

You can also obtain mount armor and trophies as random drops. I, for example, got the Traveling Merchant’s Tack after an event and then looted the Brigandine Barding horse armor from a regular enemy while clearing the Malnok Stronghold in Fractured Peaks and the Steppe Fetish Trophy from a random mob in the Dry Steppes.

To summon your mount in Diablo 4, press the Z key on the keyboard or D-pad right on a controller. You can discover different mounts by exploring Sanctuary. While mounted, you can cover the ground faster, and it also allows you to get a burst of speed to move past enemies. Your mount can also get intimidated by a large group of monsters, so keep an eye on the orange bar that indicates the mount’s fear level. You also have a dismount attack, which will send you flying from your horse in the direction of your mouse and cause you to land, dealing damage in an area.
