Blizzard switched to a battle pass model when the developer moved to Overwatch 2 last fall. And since then, players have had four different opportunities to earn an eclectic array of cosmetics.
While 80 levels might seem like a tall task, some players are capable of breezing through those levels. For them, the wait for the next season—season five in this case—can feel long.
Overwatch 2 season four began on Tuesday, April 11. Since then, there are some players who have already completed the hero shooter’s premium battle pass, earning a Mythic Sigma skin in the process. Now, their main source of progression in Overwatch strictly revolves around their personal development as a player.
With the move to season five, players will ditch this season’s “space opera” theme, but it appears as though the general aesthetic for the battle pass will be something not of this world. In a roadmap for OW2 published by Blizzard last month, the developer teased fanciful images that suggest season five will bear a fantasy theme akin to what someone would expect from Dungeons & Dragons or Lord of the Rings.
OW2 seasons are set to last about two months, giving players ample time to complete the game’s seasonal battle passes. And with the calendar flipping over to June, season five isn’t as far away as some might suspect.
Overwatch 2 season five start date and time
Season five is set to begin on Tuesday, June 13. That is the day season four is set to end, and based on the way Blizzard has released seasonal content in Overwatch 2, players should anticipate season five beginning that afternoon, likely shortly after 1pm CT.
Because Blizzard releases heroes every other season, there will not be a new hero in season five, so the new season will be a bit different compared to previous ones when it comes to what’s being offered throughout.
Instead, Blizzard is focusing on limited-time events and modes like Summer Games, Mischief and Magic prop hunt, QuestWatch, a Mythic skin for Tracer, and a new take on the battle pass where players will “journey through” a story.
Meanwhile, the game’s director Aaron Keller posted on June 2 that his regular Dev Take blog coming soon will share information about hero balancing in the upcoming season. Responding to a social media post, he confirmed that the development team has “a lot” planned specifically for the game’s newest hero, Lifeweaver.
