You can find more Ultra Beasts in Pokémon Go, and Kartana has returned to five-star raids for a limited time. Because you have a short time to catch it, it’s important to know the best Pokémon to use against it and all its weaknesses.

Kartana is one of the handful of Ultra Beasts you can catch in Pokémon Go, and it has one of the lower defenses. Despite having low defenses, expect Kartana to hit pretty hard, which means you want to take it out quickly before you lose your Pokémon and have to regroup.

Kartana is a Grass and Steel-type Pokémon. It will be weak against Fighting and Fire-type moves and resistant against Dragon, Electric, Fairy, Grass, Normal, Poison, Psychic, Rock, Steel, and Water-type moves. You primarily want to focus on using Fire-type attacks, as they are the most effective moves against Kartana.

Despite having lower defenses, Kartana’s Steel-type protects it from multiple attacks, meaning you don’t want to use a wide variety of attacks against it. Doubling down on Fire-type Pokémon and moves is likely your best bet when facing off against it in Pokémon Go. However, knowing the entire moveset Kartana will use during battle is important. Thankfully, it doesn’t have a large attack pool. These are all the attacks Kartana can use during the five-star raid:

  • Air Slash (Flying-type)
  • Aerial Ace (Flying-type)
  • Leaf Blade (Grass-type)
  • Night Slash (Dark-type)
  • Razor Leaf (Grass-type)
  • X-Scissor (Bug-type)

These attacks make Kartana effective at fighting against Ghost, Ground, Psychic, Rock, and Water-type Pokémon. You want to avoid having them on your team to ensure Kartana cannot hit them with powerful attacks.

Best counters for Kartana in Pokémon Go

When battling against Kartana, the best Pokémon to use in Pokémon Go are Mega Charizard, Blaziken, and Moltres.

Mega Charizard is always an excellent choice for five-star raids when you need a Fire-type Pokémon in Pokémon Go. You can choose the Mega Y Charizard or Mega X Charizard. Both are optimal choices, mainly because they will boost other Fire-type Pokémon during the fight. The best moveset to teach Mega Charizard is the fast move Fire Spin and the charged moves Blast Burn and Overheat.

Next, we have Blaziken, a Fire and Fighting-type Pokémon. Blaziken can use a Mega evolution, which is a choice if you’d rather go this route and use more Fire and Fighting-type Pokémon alongside your allies. I recommend using Blaziken’s Fire-type attacks rather than any Fighting-type ones. The best moveset to teach Blaziken is the fast move Fire Spin and the charged moves Blast Burn and Blaze Kick.

The last Pokémon I recommend is Moltres, a Fire and Flying-type Legendary Pokémon. Moltres is one of the more common Legendaries who appear relatively often in Pokémon Go, making it an excellent choice against Kartana. The best moveset to teach Moltres is the fast move Fire Spin and the charged moves Overheat and Fire Blast. You can also use Shadow Moltres if you’d rather focus on more damage.

You need a full team of six Pokémon to face off against Kartana. These are some other choices I highly recommend for filling out for the rest of your Pokémon Go team.

  • Arcanine
  • Darmanitan
  • Emboar
  • Entei
  • Groudon
  • Heatran
  • Ho-Oh
  • Houndoom
  • Infernape
  • Magmortar
  • Reshiram
  • Volcarona

After defeating Kartana in the raid, you can catch it and add it to your collection. There’s a slim chance you might catch a Shiny version of this Pokémon.
