With Destiny 2: Lightfall, guardians will learn to use the power of Strand and visit the city of Neomuna, setting foot on Neptune. Strand is the second new element to enter the game after Beyond Light‘s Stasis treaded new ground. Between Stasis, the overhauled Light-based classes, and Strand, guardians will have plenty of ways to take the fight to Calus and the Witness. And they’ll need it.
Lightfall is crowning the Witness as the main antagonist to the guardians and the Traveler, with Calus dutifully fulfilling the role as its new Disciple. With the Witness’ forces invading Neomuna, the Vanguard will show up to lend a hand—and they’ll find a few new allies in the city anyway.
The joys of Lightfall aren’t just on a new city or a new subclass, though. Players will also see a series of far-reaching adjustments to some of the game’s core systems, including changes to the seasonal model, a loadout manager, and a new buildcrafting system. Here’s the release date for Destiny 2’s Lightfall expansion and the next step in the Light vs. Dark saga.
When does Destiny 2’s Lightfall expansion release?
Lightfall drops at reset (11am CT) on Feb. 28. Bungie has revealed the long-anticipated date at the beginning of Season of Plunder, and with Plunder gone and Season of the Seraph basically over (after a riveting epilogue), Lightfall is just around the corner. Don’t leave any loose ends for the last minutes, though. As usual, Destiny 2 will go under a long pre-expansion maintenance period ahead of Lightfall.
What time does the Lightfall maintenance start?
Lightfall’s server downtime will also take out the Destiny 2 servers for 24 hours before the expansion releases. Players can expect the servers to go dark at reset (11am CT) on Monday, Feb. 27. Be sure to wrap up any seasonal pursuits you may have missed, and don’t forget to keep your day one loadout in your favorite character.

What else is coming to Destiny 2 with Lightfall?
In addition to the Lightfall campaign and Strand, players will see a litany of features coming to the game with the expansion—even if they don’t own Lightfall. Guardian Ranks, for instance, will add some extra guidance to Destiny 2’s progression and what to do, and will even unlock some mods. The overhauled buildcrafting also brings new Armor Charge mods, as opposed to Charged With Light and Elemental Wells. Players can also expect a tuning pass to weapons and abilities, with balancing changes on the horizon. Season of the Risen’s PsiOps Battlegrounds and Season of the Seraph’s Heist Battlegrounds will remain in-game. And Bungie has plenty in stock for season 21 and beyond, though these changes won’t go live with Lightfall’s launch. There will be plenty to do in Lightfall from day one—and even more throughout Year Six.
