Top tier Chinese Dota 2 team Newbee have put their demons to rest by defeating the very squad that swept them at The International 7 grand finals: Team Liquid.
The grand finals of ESL One Genting was a series for the ages—one that brought out the absolute best in both teams. Each game was extremely high-level, pleasing both casual fans and connoisseurs of the game alike.
The match went the full distance of five games, with each side trading wins up until the final map. But it was Newbee who came out on top, thanks to their superb drafting, execution, and teamwork. It took a huge amount of effort for them to eke out the win, given that Liquid are still the best team in the world—but for Song “Sccc” Chun and the rest of his teammates, the struggle probably made their revenge so much sweeter.
This result reaffirms Newbee’s position as the No. 1 team in China—crushing any thoughts of them getting worse after TI7. Every single player is at the top of their game, and now, no one can say that they didn’t deserve to make the grand finals of TI7.
The spoils of war for Newbee include $160,000 in prize money, as well as 200 more points toward their campaign for TI8 later this year. Liquid will leave Malaysia with half as much money, and 120 points.
Newbee’s position on the Dota 2 Pro Circuit leaderboard won’t change as a result of their victory at Genting, although they’re now 750 points ahead of Evil Geniuses. Meanwhile, Liquid extend their 360-point lead over Virtus Pro. Along with Team Secret, EG will receive $40,000 and 40 qualification points.
