Tony Reed, the decade-long CEO of the Game Developers Association of Australia (GDAA) has announced his resignation from the company and almost simultaneously revealed his next move: helping to establish Epic Games across Australia and New Zealand.
Reed made the announcement at the end of the Game Connect Asia Pacific (GCAP) conference earlier today.
The arrival of Epic Games is certainly an exciting development for the region. Teams have already begun investing heavily into Fortnite: Battle Royale and have been since Epic Games announced a $100 million dollar prize pool for the game earlier this year.
Most notably, homegrown favorites Renegades recently added arguably the strongest team in the region to its roster. Securing the x2Twins, MrFreshAsian, and Hershicals. Renegades are currently leading the CoreOCE Fortnite League and don’t look to be slipping any time soon. Also competing are Chiefs Esports Club in second place, Tainted Minds in third, followed by Crimson Gaming and Avante Garde.
It isn’t clear yet what this means for ANZ Fortnite fans and players alike, but if the recent Fortnite Skirmish events are anything to go by, the region will definitely have something to look forward to.
With strong teams already in development, perhaps the presence of Epic Games might just help the region compete with the rest of the world. Reed said that “there’s going to be a lot of news” on the company’s plans for the region in the near future. Guess we will have to wait and see what comes next.
