Hallow’s End is World of Warcraft‘s take on Halloween, giving players the chance to celebrate the best time of the year while hunting down rare achievements and seasonal collector’s items.

While the event has undergone several changes in recent years, one thing has remained the same—the Headless Horseman’s mount is still one of the most sought-after cosmetic items in the game, and it’s just as tricky to get your hands on as ever.

Unlike other rare mounts, the Horseman’s Reins are only available to loot during a brief two-week window around Halloween each year. So, if you want to pick up the mount for yourself, you’ll have to devote time to running the Headless Horseman encounter before Hallow’s End comes to a close.

Unfortunately, the drop rate for the mount is ridiculously low. That being said, there are ways to maximize your chances of getting your hands on the Horseman mount in WoW The War Within.

Loot-Filled Pumpkins have a small chance—roughly 0.4 percent—to include The Horseman’s Reins, which is the item that teaches the Headless Horseman’s mount.

The Loot-Filled Pumpkin is the only item containing the Horseman’s Reins. You won’t be able to receive the mount by looting the Horseman himself, but it’s still worth checking him for any further treasure once you defeat him.

It’s a brutal drop rate, putting other popular mounts like the Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent to shame.

To get Loot-Filled Pumpkins, you need to run the seasonal Hallow’s End encounter on a level 60 or higher character. The purple-rarity Loot-Filled Pumpkins drop once per 24 hours, meaning you can run the encounter several times across your account to increase your chances of seeing the mount.

Don’t let the incredibly low drop rate for the Horseman’s Reins deter you from chasing after the mount, though. You can increase your chances of looting the Horseman’s Reins by ensuring you have a roster of level-appropriate alts ready to tackle the Dungeon Finder encounter.

It’s not the most exciting boss encounter in the game, but the introduction of a hard mode in 2023 added a new level of challenge for seasoned players.

How many times can you complete the Headless Horseman encounter?

You must be level 60 or higher to receive a Loot-Filled Pumpkin, which is the item that can contain The Horseman’s Reins. Alongside the mount, other treasures like the battle pet Arfus and the Windborne Velocidrake: Hallow’s End Armor are also available in this container.

There’s no limit on how many times you can queue up for the seasonal dungeon and defeat the Headless Horseman, but the purple-quality Loot-Filled Pumpkins can only be picked up once a day by characters who meet the level requirement, so you’re somewhat limited in terms of farming.

Hallow’s End 2024 kicks off on Oct. 25 and finishes on Nov. 8, taking place later than the 2023 iteration of the fan-favorite event. If you see this before the event goes live, make sure to level up your alts and get them ready to farm The Headless Horseman’s mount.
