Earlier today Valve, the developer of many extremely popular online games such as DotA 2 and Counter Strike, released their breakdown of how they intend to distribute the prize pool for their annual DotA tournament, The International. This year features a record breaking amount of money to be won, as of right now $16,819,356 thanks to their intuitive crowd funding system.
The distribution is as follows, represented in the percent of the prize pool and how much money they’d take home if the amount stayed at $16,819,356:
It appears like this year Valve intend to spread out the wealth. Last year’s International 4 awarded 46% of the prize pool to the winner and 0% to 16th place. Although the percentage cut is smaller for the champion the amount of money they will receive this year will be significantly larger than before due to the previous tournament only offering $10,931,103 total.
The most interesting thing I see is that a team who finishes in 6th place here will receive more money than most games offer for first place in their respective yearly championship!
