Earlier this week, we were informed by Blizzard that Warsong Commander, one of the core cards of the Patron Warrior deck would get nerfed.
Those who were playing in the closed beta of the game will recall that there was another nerf on this card. At the time it read, “Your other minions have Charge”, which was insanely overpowered since you could play minions like Boulderfist Ogre or even Molten Giants in combination with Youthful Brewmasters to deal massive amounts of damage.
Currently the card reads, “Whenever you summon a minion with 3 or less attack, give it Charge”. With the next patch, it will read, “Your charge minions have +1 attack”.
Blizzard made a post about the upcoming nerf explaining the reason behind it, part of which specifically referred to WC.
“In the case of Warsong Commander, we felt this change was necessary to help expand both future design space and to stand by our overarching game philosophy that battles between minions and fighting for board control is what makes Hearthstone fun and compelling.”
It was quite some time already that people had been complaining about how the Patron Warrior deck was overpowered and that you would rarely not see it being played in a tournament line-up. With its huge damage burst, it was impossible for less experienced players, and sometimes for more experienced ones as well, to cope with. Not too long after this announcement Ben Brode, the senior game designer, made a short vlog about it, explaining why Warsong Commander was nerfed this way.
