One year after the first-ever Halo World Championship, 12 teams will converge on Burbank, California for the second annual HWC. At stake? $1 million.
The action begins Friday with three-team group play and kicks off with a match between a pair of goliaths: Team EnVyUs and Splyce.
The two teams consist of former Denial Esports teammates, Cuyler “Huke” Garland and Jesse “bubu dubu” Moeller. The pair broke into the international scene at last year’s event, placing fourth after upsetting Team Liquid in the quarterfinals.
Since Huke and legendary player Eric “Snip3down” Wrona joined the EnVyUs roster, the team has captured several titles. The first came at HCS Las Vegas, and followed up with a HCS Pro League title in the fall. The team also has placed third at UGC St. Louis and ME Las Vegas.
The defending champions are back and on a hot streak. Bradley “Frosty” Bergstrom, Tony “LethuL” Campbell Jr., Mathew “Royal2” Fiorante, and Paul “SnakeBite” Duarte are just a year removed from capturing the most prestigious title of their careers. Now under the OpTic Gaming banner, the former CLG team enters Worlds less than a month after winning the Millennial Esports Las Vegas. OpTic only lost three maps total in the tournament, finishing with a 19-3 map record. Their only losses came to eventual runner-up Team Liquid.
The other teams competing are FAB Games eSports, London Conspiracy, Luminosity Gaming, SoaR Gaming, Splyce, Str8 Rippin, Supremacy, TMMT Crowd Pleasers, Team Immunity, and Team Liquid. The 12 teams will be split into four groups of three and play round-robin. The top two in each group will enter the upper bracket while the remaining four enter the lower bracket. The four teams will have to play in a single-elimination bracket while the others have the luxury of double-elimination.
All the games will be available to stream at Twitch.tv/Halo, Twitch.tv/ESL_Halo, and Beam.pro/Halo. Both Twitch and Beam have respective mobile apps so you can watch away from home.
