GreedFall 2‘s here, and if you’re a fan of the first GreedFall game, you’re likely eager to jump in. There’s also a chance you haven’t played but are still interested in this game, and you may be wondering whether you need to play GreedFall 1 before GreedFall 2.

Whether you’re worried you may need a GreedFall refresher before diving back in or simply want to try out this game but are unsure if you can without finishing its predecessor first, knowing when this game takes place is crucial so you can prepare. Here’s what you need to know about whether or not you need to play GreedFall 1 before GreedFall 2.

You don’t need to play GreedFall 1 before you play GreedFall 2 because the second one’s actually a prequel timeline-wise. The events that unfold come before the original game, so playing the second one first’s actually best if you want to watch the story unfold in chronological order.

Since GreedFall 2 is a sequel, you would naturally expect it to occur after the storyline of the first game. Instead, it takes us back to before the first game with a fresh storyline and new characters. There are certainly nods, references, and familiar faces from the first game throughout, but the devs have said these are all minor and that the game can be enjoyed just the same without playing the first one.

Because of this, it’s up to you whether you explore GreedFall or GreedFall 2 first. I’ve never played the first one, and the storyline for GreedFall 2‘s completely separate and easy to follow without it just as the devs promised, so feel free to jump in even if you’re not familiar with this world.

When does GreedFall 2 take place?

GreedFall 2 takes place three years before the events of the original GreedFall. You play as a native originally from the island Teer Fradee who’s kidnapped and brought to the continent of Gacane. Once you’re there, you rally companions to fight alongside you as you navigate a strange new world filled with conflict and under attack by the deadly Malichor plague.

The story starts three years before GreedFall, but it’s currently unknown how much time the game spans. Considering there’s a hefty GreedFall 2 roadmap with lots of future content and updates planned, it certainly could end up catching up to the story events of the first game. For now, though, it’s set far enough in the past to be its own separate story.

Where does GreedFall 2 take place?

GreedFall 2 primarily unfolds across the continent of Gacane. Throughout the story, you get to explore several areas around this region, like Thynia and Uxantis.

If you’re a fan of GreedFall, the location of GreedFall 2 might surprise you since the island of Teer Fradee is the main explorable area in the original game. You do still get to see the island of Teer Fradee since you’re a native of this area, but since the first game is primarily focused on this location, GreedFall 2 sets out to explore new areas instead.

New regions to explore will also be added later on, so the setting will continue to grow.
