Ahead of the first look at the hotly-anticipated Magic: The Gathering and Marvel collaboration at New York Comic Con in October, one fan was lucky enough to come across a preview of what fans can expect to see at the expo—with some of Marvel’s biggest names front and center.
The MTG player came across a selection of Secret Lair cards many believe will be given out to NYCC attendees this year, posting an image taken from a now-deleted Facebook listing today. The cards in the listing include a reprint of Teferi’s Protection, but more importantly, four Legendary cards that are each connected to one of Marvel’s equally-legendary characters.
The King of Wakanda Black Panther, Tony Stark as Iron Man, X-Men legend Wolverine, and first Avenger Captain America make up the four Legendary MTG creatures allegedly revealed in the Marketplace post, each with unique costs and effects. Black Panther adds +1/+1 counters to lands whenever a creature enters the battlefield, after which they can be moved to another creature for a cost, while “Titan of Innovation” Iron Man creates Treasure tokens and can sacrifice artifacts to summon more powerful artifacts straight from the deck.
Wolverine’s effect sees him gain power and toughness whenever he deals damage to another creature and can regenerate each turn and Cap can “throw” Equipment to hit multiple targets before “catching” another Equipment. The cards’ reveal left plenty of fans excited and some are already putting together combos for their Commander decks, with a Marvel hero at the forefront.
That’s not to say everyone believes these MTG cards to be true just yet, with many skeptical about whether the post and cards are fake. But, given the quality of the photo, the effects and design, and the fact the Marketplace listing is in Smyrna, Tennessee—the confirmed site of a Wizard of the Coast distribution center—has many players sold already.
The post was up for approximately 10 hours before it was taken down without warning, further adding an element of mystery to the release. In any case, given the hype surrounding the collab (originally announced in 2023) and Marvel’s NYCC plans including a panel with MTG involved, it won’t be long until we know for sure if these cards are real.
