Baldur’s Gate 3 is a massive game by any metric: Its sheer scale and depth of content available are quite impressive. However, as Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke recently revealed, the game was meant to be even larger during development.
In a new BAFTA video interview released on Friday, Aug. 16, Vincke was asked about Baldur’s Gate 3 secrets that not many people knew about. In response, he stated that the game was initially meant to be much larger and included many elements that were ultimately removed.

“Well, this is a really random tidbit, but Moonrise Towers used to be two towers,” he revealed. “And now, we shipped with only one tower. And for a long time, there was actually the ruins of the second tower, and then we removed that also. But originally, we planned on having two towers. The reason we removed the extra tower was purely productionally. It was, just, the game was getting too big, and so we had to cut that out.”
Vincke laughed at the reaction his statement received during the interview and acknowledged that Baldur’s Gate 3 was ultimately “a very big game indeed.” He also stated that despite this, he was worried that the game would end up being too short due to the amount of scrapped content it had.
“You would be surprised to know that we actually had many more regions that we planned to make,” he said. “I was afraid the game was going to be too short originally, but I’ve notoriously always been very bad at judging the length of our games.”
Baldur’s Gate 3 is one of the largest games released last year, with dozens of hours of playtime and many places to explore. Despite this, the game continues to expand through updates to this day.
