Runeshards are an essential material in Diablo 4 because they’re used to open the Pit of the Artificer, which in turn is where you get Masterworking materials for upgrades.

Because getting Runeshards is so important for developing your endgame build, it stands to reason you’ll want to know how to get them—here’s where to find Runeshards in Diablo 4 and how to use them once you’ve collected some.

There are five ways you can earn Runeshards in World Tier Four: Whisper Caches, Helltides, Legion Chests, Nightmare Dungeons, and World Bosses.

To earn Runeshards from the Tree of Whispers, you need to earn 10 Grim Favors by completing the Tree of Whispers objectives across the map then returning to the Tree, choosing a cache, and open it. This will give you loot, and more importantly, a few Runeshards.

You can also get Runeshards through Helltide events like defeating elites and opening chests. In the same area, you’ ‘ll notice Legion Events (these appear as orange circles on your map). Completing these events then opening the Legion rewards chest you earn will also give you Runeshards. This is my preferred method for collecting the essential material because you can also earn Aberrant Cinders to open the Helltide Chests.

Finally, you can earn plenty of Runeshards by completing Nightmare Dungeons and defeating World Bosses, though this may take some time.

How to use Runeshards in Diablo 4

You can use Runeshards to open the Pit via the Artificier’s Obelisk, which is northwest of the Cerrigar waypoint in Cerrigar in Scolsglen.

If you’re just starting the Pit, it only costs one Runeshard to enter tier one. As you progress through the tiers, the Runeshard cost will increase—as does the difficulty level.

If you don’t see the Artificer’s Obelisk in Cerrigar, be sure to check you’re in World Tier Four and have completed the quest asking you to complete a Tier 46 or higher Nightmare Dungeon. If you’ve completed this quest, you’ll unlock the Artificer’s Obelisk and can begin earning Runeshards. So, if you’re wondering how to get Runeshards to enter the Pit for Masterworking materials, this is what you need to know.
