Why is VALORANT console rank being reset?

As players continue to try the console version of VALORANT, current beta players are quickly finding out that their ranks are being reset very soon—but aren’t sure why this is happening.

After grinding through the beta, Riot Games has finally released VALORANT on live servers for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, allowing everyone around the world to experience one of the most popular tactical first-person shooters on controller.

There will, however, be many first-time users jumping into ranked queues, which means the developers need to reset the ranks to keep everyone in the right tier.

In a new video explainer, game production director Steven Eldredge explained that before the beta, the devs at Riot had to set projections for how many people would jump into ranked play, how long they would play, and how quickly they’d adjust and learn how to play on console.

The console player base “blew past [Riot’s] skill projections,” causing hefty inconsistencies across multiple ranks in the competitive queue, with some players being placed in ranks that are higher or lower than what they should be. To resolve these issues, Riot will be resetting all ranks, and having players compete in new placement matches with the launch of VALORANT console.

Eldredge also said that ranks might seem lower than before, but this should be expected due to the various adjustments that the devs made to help even out the growing player population in each ranked distribution. Even if this happens, you should be able to climb out of that Elo with enough good games and get right back on track.
